Moving map shows Chinese New Year travel rush in real time! With a bit of technical ingenuity, Chinese web giant Baidu has developed a moving map of travelers as they return home for Lunar New Year, which begins this week. The map, which updates hourly, works by pulling location data from users' mobile phones as they travel across the country. Users can click to see which routes and cities have the most traffic at any given moment. The Lunar New Year, also known as spring festival in China, is a hectic time for the country of over 1.3 billion people, as hundreds of millions leave the cities to visit their relatives, many of whom remain in the countryside. Although the country is rapidly urbanizing, a huge number of city-dwelling Chinese are considered migrant workers, and do not enjoy full legal and social rights in urban areas. View the map here. Watch 63 years of climate change in one horrifying GIF         Global warming is still the topic of much debate, but a short video posted recently by NASA is fairly convincing. The 15-second animation, which was posted by NASA last week and picked up on Tuesday by Co.Exist , shows a view of the entire globe with an overlay that details climate change. NASA scientists analyzed data collected over the past 63 years by 1,000 meteorological stations from around the world, and the animation they compiled shows just how rapidly the Earth’s climate is changing.   The GIF is a consolidated version of NASA’s full animation that helps illustrate just how drastic the change has been since 1950. Pope Francis was the king of public relations in 2013, but something went terribly wrong for the pontiff today. In the window at St. Peter's Square, he stood beside two children, who each released "peace doves" over the crowd. This year (2014) the Blood Moon - Tetrad will be starting in April.  It will be interesting to see how the blood moons will take part in the scheme of history. All the full moons have names.  The names typically coincide with months of the year, or seasons. One of the most famous moon names is the Hunter's Moon.  It is the full moon  immediately following the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon occurring most closely to the autumnal equinox.   The Hunter’s Moon, in skylore, is also sometimes called the Blood Moon. Early risers will have a great opportunity to watch how the moon moves rapidly across the sky this week. To see the quick movement of the moon , observers need a set of bright markers across the sky, exactly the kind of signposts in the night sky this week. Two bright stars and three bright planets mark the moon’s path across the sky. Let’s start by looking for the moon tonight (Jan. 22). Many people are surprised that the moon cannot always be seen in the sky, and this evening is an example of that. In most places tonight the moon will not rise until after midnight. Watch for it rising slowly above the eastern horizon. Most of the motion you see the moon make in a single night is due to Earth's rotation.
